Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs

Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs (she/her) identifies as a “Queer Black Troublemaker” and “Black Feminist Love Evangelist.” These identities shine through in her poetic writings on justice, motherhood, and community. She focuses on queer community building with organizations such as Southerners on New Ground, Kindred Southern Healing Justice Network, and the Mobile Homecoming Project. For the 2023 Queer Studies Conference keynote address, Alexis will offer “Breathe Through Your Whole Body: What Seals Can Teach us About Queer Transformation.” Drawing on her 2022 Whiting Award-winning book, Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals, Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs will share lessons from seals about living at the speed of love, shedding whiteness like an old fur coat, and diving deeper than we ever thought we could.
